Brief filed in Indian taxation case in Connecticut

The Connecticut Supreme Court is due to take up a tribal member's refusal to pay about $150,000 in state income taxes.

Jo-Ann Dark-Eyes says she is exempt because she earned the income as an employee of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. She says she lived in Indian Country during the time in question.

The state of Connecticut is challenging the claim, saying the land where Dark-Eyes lived was not held in trust. But Dark-Eyes says it was part of the tribe's settlement area as defined by Congress.

The tribe is backing Dark-Eyes in the case.
