GOP strategist denies secretly taking tribal money
Thursday, July 15, 2004

A Republican strategist for President Bush is denying allegations that he secretly received money from a gaming tribe.

Ralph Reed, former director of the Christian Coalition, is opposed to gaming. But The Nation, a left-leaning publication, reported last month that he was secretly hired by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to lobby on gaming issues. The Nation said he got paid through GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff and public relations executive Mike Scanlon.

Reed denied the charges in a statement provided to World Net Daily but would not elaborate. His spokesperson would only say "All [allegations], of course, are false statements."

Abramoff and Scanlon are the subjects of a Senate Indian Affairs Committee investigation into high fees they charged four tribes, including the Coushattas. The committee last month issued subpoenas to lobbyists as part of its probe.
