Cayuga land claim proposal draws opposition

A proposal to settle the Cayuga Nation 64,000-acre land claim is running into opposition from local leaders and residents.

Gov. George Pataki (R) is offering the Cayuga Nation gaming rights in the Catskills. The tribe would give $3 million each to two counties that benefited from the stolen land. The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma, the second party in the litigation, is not part of the proposal

Local leaders and United Citizens for Equality, an anti-treaty rights group, say the deal doesn't sound good to them. UCE plans to protest tonight at a meeting where the proposal will be presented.
