State claims tribal tax decision could be costly

State and local leaders in Connecticut say they could lose out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue if tribal members are granted a state tax exemption.

The state Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case involving a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation who derived income living on the tribe's settlement reservation. Jo-Ann Dark Eyes could receive a refund of up to $200,000 if the court accepts her argument that the land is Indian Country.

State attorney general Richard Blumenthal and the leaders of three towns near the reservation submitted briefs in the case. The tribe is backing Dark Eyes.
