Arapaho language in danger of disappearing

The Arapaho language will disappear in 15 years without a major revitalization effort, a tribal college professor said.

Eugene Ridgely Jr., director of the bilingual education program at the Wind River Tribal College in Wyoming, said only 1,000 out of 8,000 Arapahos can speak the language. The number of people who are fluent and conversational in the language is dropping rapidly, he said.

The Northern Arapaho Tribe will meet with elders and others today at the college to discuss the language effort.
