Saginaw Chippewa leader who paid lobbyists ousted
Friday, June 4, 2004

The former chief of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan was ousted from the tribal council on Wednesday.

Among other charges, Maynard Kahgegab was accused of trying to hinder a Senate investigation into lobbying fees. When he was chief, Kahgegab used more than $10 million in tribal funds to pay a public relations firm linked to a high-paid Republican lobbyist.

Kahgegab was also accused of holding back documents related to the public relations firm.

Angered by reports that four tribes spent at least $45 million in lobbying and public relations fees, Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) is leading the investigation into GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, owner of public affairs firm Capital Campaign Strategies.
