Non-Indians fight Tulalip Tribes jurisdiction

Non-Indians on the Tulalip Reservation in Washington say a tribal judge's ruling supports their fight against tribal jurisdiction.

The Tulalip Tribes are asserting more authority over tidelands within reservation boundaries. The tribes also charge a 1 percent excise tax on land transactions.

But the Tulalip Community Association, a group which claims 500 members, says the tribe has no jurisdiction over non-Indians. The group is welcoming a tribal judge's ruling that questions whether the tribe owns the tidelands.
