Canada's Supreme Court takes Native logging cases

The Supreme Court of Canada announced on Thursday it would hear an appeal over the logging rights of First Nations.

The provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are challenging rulings that allow Natives to cut and sell trees on Crown land without obtaining licenses. The lower courts said treaties preserved Native logging rights on traditional lands.

The Supreme Court has ruled in the past that Native fishing and hunting can take place on Crown land.
