Groups seeking recognition from the state of Maryland have to trace their history back to 1790.

For some, that is a difficult task. The Piscataway Conoy Tribe spent nearly $800,000 over seven years to document its petition only to have it rejected by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) last year. He said the tribe didn't have enough records.

Some groups, like the rival Piscataway Indian Nation, say they won't participate in the process. They accused the Piscataway Conoy Tribe of being backed by gaming interests. The state is considering a plan to authorize slot machines, leading some to fear a tribal casino.
