The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island is negotiating the payment of nearly $79,000 in property taxes owed to the town of Charlestown.
The tribe says it will pay the outstanding tax bill. Tribal officials offered a proposal to the town recently.
The tribe is trying to have land in Charlestown placed into trust but the town and the state oppose the request. The land would not fall under state jurisdiction, unlike the tribe's current reservation.
