Western Shoshone group challenges mine approval

The Western Shoshone Defense Project and an environmental group are challenging the Bureau of Land Management's approval of a gold and copper mining project in northern Nevada.

The groups say BLM hasn't asked Newmont Mining Corporation, a mining company, to set aside enough money to monitor possible groundwater contamination. The Environmental Protection Agency suggested a $33.5 million fund but BLM is allowing the company to establish a $408,000 trust fund.

The proposed mine site is already marked by tailings from an old mine.
