Tribes file civil rights complaint against Neb. county

The Winnebago Tribe and the Omaha Tribe have filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging discriminatory hiring practices by Thurston County, Nebraska.

The tribes say the county does not advertise open positions and neglects Native applicants by not posting job notices in tribal newspapers. The complaint calls for the county to stop its practices and pay damages.

County officials say they do not exclude Natives, who make up 52 percent of the county's population. They say few Natives apply for jobs.
