The University of Illinois plans to poll students on the use of the school's controversial Chief Illiniwek mascot.

Most students and alumni support the mascot, which is heavily criticized by Indian groups. The school senate, however, voted 14-5 in 2002 to eliminate the chief.

A rally on the school campus yesterday drew representatives of various tribes and organizations who spoke against the mascot.

The board of trustees was to consider getting rid of the mascot but tabled a resolution.
