Navajo leader gives BIA a 'D' for school funding

Half of the school's on the Bureau of Indian Affairs construction list are located on the Navajo Nation.

The list determines which schools will receive funding in the federal budget. But Wallace Charley, a delegate to the Navajo Nation council, said the federal government has always underfunded Navajo schools. "I would give them a D," he told The Farmington Daily Times.

New BIA head Dave Anderson is publishing a list of 14 schools in need of replacement. The list is based on most health and safety deficiencies, environmental deficiencies, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and condition of existing utilities and site improvements.
