Northern Cheyenne Tribe sues BLM to stop drilling

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana filed suit against the Bureau of Land Management on February 18 to challenge expansion of a drilling project.

The tribe says federal officials violated the National Historic Preservation Act and failed to consult with the tribe before approving 85 coalbed methane wells, most of which have already been drilled. The suit seeks to set aside the project pending further consideration.

The tribe wants a greater say because the drilling would impact the watershed.
