GOP Congressman wants probe into tribal enrollment

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) dashed off a series of letters on Monday seeking a probe into the way the Bureau of Indian Affairs handled enrollment for a California tribe.

Wolf, an opponent of gaming, said the FBI should investigate alleged conflicts of interest at the BIA. Officials in the Sacramento office authorized a new election that led to the expansion of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians' membership to include BIA employees and their families.

Wolf wrote letters to President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Interior's inspector general and the GAO's comptroller general. He called for a moratorium on federal recognition decisions. The Ione Band is already recognized.
