Navajo scholarship requires knowledge of language

Students applying for the Navajo Nation's Chief Manuelito Scholarship must take a 10-week course in the Navajo language and another course in tribal government.

The requirements help Navajo students who didn't grow up on the reservation learn more about the their language and culture. In addition, students must maintain a high grade point average and test scores.

The tribe awarded 70 scholarships, each worth $7,000, last year.
