Federal Recognition
Founder of Subway bankrolled Schaghticoke Tribe

The man behind the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's successful bid for federal recognition is Frederick A. DeLuca, founder of Subway Restaurants.

In interviews with the press, DeLuca and said he wants to see a casino resort benefit schools and housing. "People making more money is not something to be feared," he said. "That creates more business."

DeLuca has been financing the tribe's federal recognition effort since 1996. According to The Hartford Courant, he once cut off support but the "disagreement" was worked out.

A tribal spokesperson said DeLuca does not have a contractual agreement for a casino. The tribe would look for financing elsewhere.

DeLuca opened his first Subway shop in Bridgeport, where he would like to see the casino built
