Federal Recognition
BIA publishes notice of Schaghticoke recognition

The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Thursday published notice of federal recognition for the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The final determination is effective May 5 unless a reconsideration is filed. Officials in Connecticut are planning to challenge the decision before the Department of Interior Board of Indian Appeals.

In the notice, principal deputy assistant secretary Aurene Martin said the tribe met all seven federal recognition criteria. She reversed a proposed finding that found evidence lacking in certain areas.

The tribe has litigation pending on several land claims. The judge was waiting on the BIA to make a final decision.
