The M�tis Nation of Saskatchewan adopted a new membership definition that includes descendants in Montana and North Dakota.

The definition states that M�tis are descendants of Aboriginal women who married Scottish or French fur traders in west-central North America.

In Canada, M�tis are not officially recognized under the Indian Act. Canada's Supreme Court has ruled that M�tis people can have constitutionally-protected rights, a decision that Metis leaders hope will lead to full status.
