The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Minnesota is working on an expansion of the tribe's casino near the Canadian border.

The first phase of the project is already near completion. The 95 hotel rooms at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino are being upgraded and will be ready by the end of November, Finance & Commerce reported.

In the second phase, the gaming floor will double in size to hold more slot machines and table games. A new, three-story lobby will lead to a remodeled restaurant and lounge, a new pool, a fitness area and an outdoor patio.

The final phase includes a banquet and meeting center. The parking lot also will be expanded.

"It is an exciting time in Grand Portage. This is a project that will once again make Grand Portage a first-class resort and destination, but will also help to ensure prosperity for the future generations of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa," council member Rob Hull said in a press release.

The cost of the project wasn't disclosed. It's due to be completed sometime in 2017.

The facility is located in Grand Portage, several miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border.
