Compacts
Florida close to compact with Seminole Tribe

With a federally-imposed deadline fast approaching, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) and the Seminole Tribe are near an agreement on a Class III gaming compact.

The two sides hope to reach an agreement by this week. At issue are the types of games the tribe can offer and the role of the state.

The tribe is asking for slot machines, which are no longer outlawed in the state, and also wants table games. The state wants a share of the revenues and a say in regulation at the tribe's casinos.

If the two sides can't come to an agreement, the Interior Department said it would issue rules for the tribe to operate slot machines.
