Schwarzenegger may have more compacts in store

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is believed to be negotiating compacts with more tribes.

The deals would have to be announced soon because state lawmakers need to approve the compacts. The state Legislature is ending its session on August 31.

Schwarzenegger already signed a compact with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, one of the holdouts to deals signed earlier in his term. Other southern California tribes, possibly the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, could be in talks.

The Agua Caliente compact authorizes up to 5,000 slot machines. The tribe is sharing 15 percent of revenues from the new machines with the state and paying another fee for its existing machines.
