Mashantucket Tribe breaks ground on expansion

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation broke ground on a $700 million expansion of its successful Foxwoods Resort Casino.

The project is aimed primarily at the non-gaming aspects of Foxwoods. The tribe will add more than 800 hotel rooms, 115,000 square feet of convention space, four restaurants, two ballrooms, a performing arts theater, four retail outlets, nightclubs and lounges, The Norwich Bulletin reported.

In terms of gaming, the tribe is bringing in 1,500 new slot machines and 45 table games. All told, 2 million-square-feet will be added to the casino.

"Foxwoods will enjoy a scale and grandeur unmatched anywhere as it adds 2,300 more permanent jobs to the payroll. And the region should benefit handsomely from such a workforce expansion, as well as the construction jobs generated in building it," The Norwich Bulletin said in an editorial.
