New Orleans mayor drops idea for more casinos

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said on Wednesday that opposition from Lousiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D) has killed plans to create a casino district.

"The governor didn't much like the idea, so it is pretty much dead," Nagin said at a Congressional hearing, The New York Times reported. Nagin said allowing more casinos in the city -- Harrah's Entertainment operates the sole one -- could help in rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

Blanco is currently fighting the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians over the tribe's attempt to establish an initial reservation and use the land for a casino. She is refusing to negotiate a Class III compact even though other tribes operate casinos and gaming is legal throughout the state.
