Tribes look for opportunities off the reservation

The rapid expansion of the $19 billion Indian gaming industry has prompted controversy over efforts by some tribes to open casinos away from existing reservations.

According to The Christian Science Monitor, three dozen tribes are seeking off-reservation casinos. A Bureau of Indian Affairs official, however, said there are only 9 gaming-related land acquisitions pending before the agency.

But officials say they have heard of dozens more proposals. That has some members of Congress worried, and they are attempting to stop the spread of casinos even before any have been approved. Some efforts would outright bar off-reservation casinos while others would limit the practice.
