Bush plan will give tax breaks to Gulf Coast casinos

Gulf coast casinos destroyed by Hurricane Katrina will be eligible for millions of dollars in tax breaks under President Bush's economic development plan, The Washington Post reports.

Providing tax breaks to the large companies that run the casinos has never been done in the past, the paper says. But Bush administration officials say there is no reason to exclude casinos from the proposed Gulf Opportunity Zone.

Under the proposal, the gaming companies would be able to deduct half the cost of investments in equipment or buildings, the paper reports.
