Rhode Island's top court hears tribal casino question

The Rhode Island Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Monday on legislation to authorize a tribal casino.

The bill would give the Narragansett Tribe and partner Harrah's Entertainment the right to open a Class III casino. The casino would be operated by the state, a lawyer for House Democratic leaders told the court.

State control is needed to address constitutional concerns that defeated the tribe's casino bid last year. But opponents, including Gov. Donald Carcieri (R), say the new measure won't help the tribe.
