A group of cities in the Bay Area has formed a group to oppose an off-reservation casino near Oakland, California.
The landless Lower Lake Rancheria Koi Nation wants to open a casino by the Oakland International Airport. The tribe is offering $30 million a year to the city to offset any impacts.
But local officials don't think any money will address their concerns. They plan to share information, legal strategies and resources to fight the casino.
The Koi Nation was placed back on
the list of federally recognized entities in January 2001 after the Bureau of
Indian Affairs determined that the tribe was never terminated.
