Mashantucket Tribe approves $700M casino expansion

Members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut approved a $700 million expansion of their casino on Monday.

The project will include a 825-room hotel, a new casino, a 5,000-seat concert theater, six nightclubs and restaurants, and a 21,000-square-foot spa. Upon completion in 2008, the expansion will create an additional 2,300 jobs.

The project comes after the neighboring Mohegan Tribe finished a $1.1 billion casino expansion. Gaming in nearby states of New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts is on the horizon.

Neighbors of the Pequot tribe are expressing concern about the proposed development. Three towns nearest to the reservation have long complained about increased crime and traffic and environmental impacts.
