Wisconsin tribes debate fate of off-reservation casino

Three Wisconsin tribes have to decide whether to resubmit an land-into-trust application for an off-reservation casino now that the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ended their legal challenge.

The Red Cliff, Lac Courte Oreilles and Mole Lake Chippewa tribes gained federal approval in 2001 to convert a dog track into a casino. But then-Gov. Scott McCallum (R) vetoed it, saying he opposed expansion of gaming.

The tribes filed a lawsuit challenging whether the veto was constitutional. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the tribes last year. The Supreme Court yesterday said it would not take the case.
