New Mexico tribe to use $1M grant to rebuild historic trading post

Kewa Pueblo in New Mexico received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to restore an historic trading post on the reservation.

The Santo Domingo Indian Trading Post was a frequent stop for rail travelers and tourists. President John F. Kennedy visited the post on December 7, 1962, according to historian Marc Simmons.

With a new New Mexico Rail Runner Express across the road, the tribe hopes to restore some of the site's former glory. "I am excited for all our pueblo members who grew up seeing the trading post every day and can once again see it rebuilt to its original state," Gov. Tony Tortalita said in a press release.

The post closed in 1995 and was gutted by fire in 2001.
