Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe gets say on wind farm

With federal recognition in hand, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is being consulted about a proposed wind farm on Cape Cod.

The tribe is concerned about Cape Wind Associates' plans to build 130 turbines at an important archaeological site. The tribe is also concerned about its fishing rights.

The Interior Department will be making a decision on the wind farm. With federal recognition, the tribe is considered a cooperating government agency.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a final determination for the tribe on February 15 [DOI Documents].
